When installing a wood floor, it is essential to ensure the right conditions for a durable and stable result. Start by checking the subfloor - it should be level, dry and free from noticeable unevenness. Any irregularities may affect both the performance and lifespan of the floor.
Moisture protection is crucial when installing flooring. Where necessary, a vapour barrier or damp-proof membrane should be used to protect the wood floor from moisture in the subfloor, particularly on concrete.
It is also important to allow sufficient expansion gaps at walls, thresholds and fixed installations. Wood is a natural material that expands and contracts depending on temperature and humidity. Without adequate expansion space, there is a risk of the floor swelling or becoming damaged.
Always follow the installation instructions for your specific wood floor to ensure the best possible result and long-lasting performance.
In most cases, wood flooring should be protected from moisture coming from the subfloor. We recommend Bjelin’s Combi Foam underlay, which combines a vapour barrier and foam for best results.
Please note that a moisture barrier is mandatory for subfloors such as newly cast concrete slabs, lightweight concrete structures, concrete floors directly on the ground, crawl space foundations, floors above warm or humid areas (such as boiler rooms or laundry rooms), or underfloor heating systems.
